Hormone replacement therapy is recommended for women whose progesterone and estrogen levels have dropped remarkably due to menopause. Every woman experiences menopause when her ovary stops producing an egg every four weeks. Menopause implies that the woman will no longer have menstruation. After a woman have menopause, she could not bear child also. This usually happens when a woman is in her 50s. During menopause, drop in the levels of estrogen and progesterone cause several symptomatic changes in women.

Symptoms of Decline in Estrogen Level

Drop in the level of estrogen can develop the following health complications:

  • Urinary problems
  • Hair loss
  • Night Sweats
  • Sleep problems
  • Moodiness
  • Low fertility level
  • Irregular menstruation
  • Difficulty in concentration
  • Hot flashes
  • Fat accumulation in abdomen

These symptoms may also develop in a woman before menopause happens (pre-menopause). In this case, the woman is still producing egg. Only the level of estrogen has dropped significantly. This affects the menstruation cycle. It becomes irregular but it is not stopped and the woman develops menopausal symptoms.

The primary function of progesterone is to prepare the womb of a woman for pregnancy. It also protects endometrium (lining of uterus).

Hormone replacement therapy is highly effective to alleviate the typical menopause-oriented symptoms. It restores the level of female hormones and allows the body to function in a normal way.

There are many women who have an early menopause. Several women also need to operate their ovaries as they develop complications after menopause and in most cases the ovary is completely removed. These women are required to undergo hormone replacement therapy or estrogen therapy, to reduce the risk of developing:

  • Coronary heart disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Dementia
  • Parkinsonism
  • Depression or anxiety

Three Main Types of Hormone Replacement Therapy

Cyclical HRT – This is appropriate for women who are still having periods but at the same time they are suffering from menopausal symptoms. The patient needs to take a regular dose of progesterone and estrogen after completing a menstrual cycle for 14 days.

Hormonal therapy with estrogen only – Patients who have undergone hysterectomy (both uterus and ovaries removed) are not in risk of developing endometrial cancer. So, progesterone is not needed for them and HRT is performed only with estrogen.

Continuous HRT – It is highly beneficial for postmenopausal patients. They need to take a combination of both progesterone and estrogen continually.

How the Treatment is done

There are different ways of taking the therapy, which include:

Tablets - Patients generally take tablets orally.

Patch - It sticks on skin. Patches are generally recommended if the patient develops menopausal symptoms like hot flushes.

Who All are Not Suitable to Use HRT

As soon as you start experiencing symptoms of menopause, you can go for HRT. However the treatment is not suitable:

  • You are pregnant
  • The patient has a history of ovarian cancer or breast cancer
  • History of thrombosis or blood clots
  • History of stroke or heart disease
  • High blood pressure (blood pressure should be controlled before the treatment is started)
  • Liver disease

If you are not suitable to undergo the treatment, medications are prescribed by physicians to reduce the menopausal symptoms.
