In the United States 6.1 million people are affected by infertility, meaning that they are unable to reproduce offspring on their own. In recent years, In Vitro fertilization (IVF) has made it possible for those that are affected by infertility to have kids with their partner. IVF first came about in the 1980’s where more than 250,000 have been born through the use of In Vitro fertilization techniques since then.

The way that IVF works is pretty simple; the woman is given certain hormones to stimulate her ovaries to produce more eggs before they begin the procedure of harvesting those eggs. The surgeon will then retrieve the eggs and place it in a petri dish to mix with sperm. After approximately forty-hours of waiting the eggs are examined to find out if the fertilization was a success; if the cells are dividing then it was a success. The fertilized eggs are now called embryos and are implanted in the women’s uterus to grow. If the egg or eggs do not latch onto the uterus wall then the In Vitro was a failure; this process could take up to 2 weeks before knowing if In Vitro was a success and by giving the women hormones it increases the chances of the eggs taking up refuge in here uterus.

The success rate is different for age groups in women. In women younger than 35 years of age 37% have a positive success rate and 28% of women in the age range of 36 to 39 years of age have a positive result for IVF. The success rate for those that are above the age of 40 years is less than 13%. So as you can see the success rate for obtaining a positive result from IVF decreases as an individual gets older.

Sometimes an egg has to be donated from a donor due to the recipient’s ovaries having some kind of genetic disease that could potentially be passed to the offspring or has damaged ovaries. The ideal age for a donor should be between the ages of 21 to 30, and often it is preferred that the donor is a younger relative. Sperm can also be donated due to low sperm count in the male or if his sperm is damaged in any way. Often times the donation could be made by an anonymous donor from a sperm bank, although there is a screening process that the woman receiving the donor sperm can decide whether or not a certain donors is the right fit for her.

But in all actuality, IVF is only used by 5% of infertile couples. Women with severely damaged, blocked or no fallopian tubes at all will generally chose to use the IVF treatment to have kids. In Vitro Fertilization is renowned globally as an acceptable treatment for infertility in women everywhere.
