Perimenopause Symptoms: What Are The Symptoms And Risks Associated With Perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the transition period starting as early as the mid thirties or early forties. With perimenopause comes the hormonal imbalance that is responsible for an array of symptoms going from weight gain to hot flashes,to loss of sexual drive.

The hormones that are usually involved are estrogen, progesterone and insulin.

1.Because progesterone is responsible for new bone formation and estrogen helps prevent bone loss, a decline in these two hormones leads to an increase risk of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is the loss of bone density over time. There are no symptoms in the early stages of the disease. Symptoms later on in the disease include painful bones.

2.The symptoms associated with progesterone deficiencies include: anxiety and stress, PMS, trouble sleeping, low bone density, excessive water retention.

3.Symptoms of estrogen deficiency are: unexplained weight gain, apple or pear-shaped body, bloating, hot flashes and sweating, depression, trouble sleeping, foggy thinking, low sexual drive, fatigue.

4.Insulin is also a major hormone that you must work at keeping balanced. It is called the “fat-storing hormone” as it is responsible for determining whether fat will be burned for energy production or stored as fat cells. Increased insulin levels not only can lead to weight gain but also to increased cholesterol, plaque in the arteries and the acceleration of the growth of cancer cells.

Usually hormone replacement therapy is recommended to bring balance to your hormones. Particularly bioidentitical hormone replacement therapy. Bioidentical hormones are plant based hormones with little side effects as opposed to synthetic hormones which have been shown in studies to increase the risk for breast cancer.

If you want to start bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, you will have to find a doctor who is knowledgeable in that area as you cannot obtain bioidentical hormones without a prescription.

But a first step you can take on your own is to change your diet to eliminate highly refined and processed food products and focus on eating fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grain and lean proteins.

Since one of the most annoying symptoms is perimenopause weight gain, you should definitely pay more attention to your diet and incorporate strength exercises in your routine. Since our metabolism slows down as we mature, we need to eat smaller portion, less simple carbohydrate and more complex carbohydrate and Omega3 Fatty acid. So the first thing you can do to work on rebalancing your hormones is to pay attention to your diet since one of the most common symptoms is perimenopause is weight gain.
