Perimenopause – What Hormones Are Involved?

When a woman enters perimenopause, the transition period leading to menopause, she will face a series of symptoms that can be mild or extreme depending on the woman. In this article, I will disucc the 2 hormones that are usually responsible for most of the symptoms that we face at menopause and what options you have to deal with that natural period of your life.

Perimenopause can start as early as the mid thirties or early forties and can last 10 to 15 years. It is usually characterized by gradual hormonal imbalance.

The symptoms of hormonal imbalance are: hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, decreased sexual drive and weight gain among others.

Although there is an array of hormones involved in maintaining our optimal health, there are 2 hormones that are particularly important: estrogen and progesterone. These two hormones are produced in the ovaries.

The balance between estrogen and progesterone shifts sometimes toward estrogen. The excess estrogen compared to progesterone is called estrogen dominance and the symptoms associated with it are night sweats and depression.

But there can be estrogen deficiency as well. Symptoms of estrogen deficiency are unexplained weight gain, apple- or pear-shaped body, bloating, sweating and hot flashes, depression, irritability, etc.

What are some of the solutions to hormonal imbalance?

A very efficient but somewhat expensive solution is bioidentical hormone therapy.

For years, the popular treatment was hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with synthetic hormones such as Premarin which were derived from horses and pigs.

Because of terrible side effects such as an increased risk of breast cancer, doctors have started switching to bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Bioidentical hormones are natural, plant based hormones that you cannot readily find in pharmacies. Pharmacists are usually the ones who put the special formulas together based on the instructions from your doctor.

One of the most problematic side effect of estrogen and progesterone imbalance is weight gain and bloating.

If you may want to try to balance your hormones on your own naturally if your symptoms are mild.

You can start balancing these hormones by taking natural supplements like Black Cohosh or Ginkgo, Dong Quai, Licorice and Ginseng.

But nutrition is a key element in controlling your symptoms. “Food is medicine and medicine is food”. So one of the first step you can take is to change your diet to include more fresh fruits, vegetable and whole grain and stay away from highly refined foods. Your diet is indeed the first thing you should try to improve if you want to balance your hormones and avoid perimemopause and menopause weight gain.
