Uterine fibroids are a rather common female disorder and most women suffer with this condition during their childbearing years. As many as one in fifteen women can be susceptible to this condition and by the time they reach 50, more than half of all women have developed fibroids.
Although common, the exact cause of the condition remains undetermined. What has been established is that the fibroids are gauged by hormonal control. Their growth has been attributed to the increase in levels of estrogen resulting in some very prominent symptoms.
There are various signs and symptoms of fibroids and the most common are below:
Chief among the symptoms of fibroids are issues related to menstrual bleeding. There can be inconsistencies with regular menstrual behavior. Periods can be longer than usual and the passing of blood clots can happen as a result. Due to heavy bleeding there is the imminent threat of suffering from anemia and low blood count. Anemia can lead to fatigue, headaches and light headedness.
Some women may experience problems trying to conceive depending on the size and placement of the fibroid. If fibroids are found growing on the inner cavity of the uterus, then the above mentioned symptoms will appear.
If fibroids start to grow on the outside of the uterus, then symptoms like pelvic pressure and pain can be experienced. The fibroids tend to press on the bladder causing pressure on the rectum. This can lead to pressure in the lower abdomen and constipation and back ache may result. Although both these conditions can results from other factors as well, it is important to take them into consideration if you suspect or have been diagnosed with uterine fibroids. Problems can be experienced while bending over, exercising while lying facing down and back pain.
Fibroids can cause bladder problems such as urinary and bowel problems. Symptoms of fibroids include the urge to urinate frequently. On the other hand, sometimes women are not able to urinate in spite of a full bladder. Fibroids pressed against the bladder limit its capacity to hold urine. The symptoms can include obstructed urination and urinary incontinence such as frequency and retention.
Fibroids can also lead to discomfort and pain during sexual intercourse. Pain may occur in specific positions during intercourse or at certain times of the menstrual cycle. Bear in mind that discomfort or pain during intercourse is a serious issue. Should you experience this, do not hesitate to mention it to your health care professional.
Constipation and bloating are also other symptoms associated with fibroids. If the fibroids grow to be large they can give the appearance of pregnancy which is unsightly.
While some women experience these symptoms of fibroids others might not suffer from any symptoms at all. Fibroids can vary in size. Usually the fibroids are small but can grow to bigger sizes and can also be multiple in numbers. By the time women reach menopause usually the fibroids shrink naturally in most cases.
Although the only way to completely solve the fibroid issue is by hysterectomy, most women do not resort to that extreme. The signs and symptoms of fibroids can be managed and regulated by other less severe herbal and natural methods.
