What is A Yeast Infection And What Are the Symptoms

Most women today at some point in their lives will suffer from yeast infections, there are many causes and in this article I will be going through a few points about what a yeast infection is, what the symptoms are and some of the things we can do to help prevent them in the future.

What is a yeast infection?

Yeast infections are the overgrowth of Candida which is a fungus. Candida is present naturally in most healthy women and is usually nothing to worry about as long as the levels remain low. As soon as Candida overgrows then this is when it becomes a problem and causes a yeast infection. Candida loves a warm and moist environment, so anything that promotes this environment is good for the Candida and bad for you!

What are the symptoms of a yeast infection?

There are 3 main symptoms of a yeast infection, the first is itchiness in the vulva and surrounding areas, it can become so unbearable at times. The next is discharge, this can smell of yeast but is never very pungent, it is usually thick and white and is often referred to as having a cottage cheese like consistency. Lastly is pain and discomfort. Sometimes women can experience pain during urination, but most commonly there is pain around the opening and the whole area can be very red. If you have any of these symptoms then you more than likely have a yeast infection.

What to do now?

If you think that you have a yeast infection there are treatments out there that you can use. There is the oral pill, which is taken once and treats the infection from within. There is also the tablet pessary that you insert usually at night, it will break up and cover the inside and hopefully get rid of the symptoms. This is often used in combination with an external creme, however, this can burn the first few times that you use it.

Prevention is better than cure

There are a number of different things that you can do to help prevent the overgrowth of Candida and therefore prevent the infection.

1. Scented products - avoid using scented products to clean with, this includes any soap or feminine products

2. Scented toilet roll - always make sure that you choose a toilet roll that is unscented as the scented kind also aggravates thrush.

3. Underwear - ensure that you wear underwear that is made of natural material such as cotton and make sure that it is loose fitting. I find thongs can often make things worse if they are too tight.

4. Clothing - avoid wearing tight clothing, often jeans are discouraged.

5. Toilet habit - most women already know this, but always wipe front to back to ensure the bacteria from your anus doesn't get transferred.

6. Swimming - the chlorine in pools can cause yeast infections, always take a shower afterwards

7. Periods - ensure that you change your tampon regularly, if you prefer to wear panty liners ensure you buy the non-scented kind.

Natural Long Term Remedy

There are also a lot of other things that you can do to help prevent future infections, if you suffer from chronic yeast infections, then you will obviously need a solution that is a bit more targeted.

The food that you eat can have a contributing factor to the growth of candida, if you become more aware of the foods that you are eating and what they do to your body then this can help.

Another recommended solution is to detox your body and restore your body's natural balance.
