Why Do I Still Look Pregnant?

After you give birth many women have the misconception that they will look the same prior to getting pregnant. Unfortunately this is not the case. Although you will no longer be carrying the weight of the baby, placenta, and some fluids, you will still feel bloated and will still have plenty of pregnancy weight to lose. You might also notice that your belly will feel loose and flabby. This is normal so don't fret. It will take some time for your body to adjust and some time will pass before your skin will tighten up again.

How long it takes to look like you did before the pregnancy can vary between women. Some can bounce back in a few months while others may take up to a year. Age, genetics, and your nutrition and level of activity before and during the pregnancy also account for this variation. However long it will take for you to lose the pregnancy weight just know that it may take some time. Your body went through nine months of change and it isn't going to bounce back in a week. Allow your body time to recover.

Soon after delivering the placenta, your body will begin to undergo hormonal changes. These hormones are responsible for the production of milk in your breasts, the shifting of your pelvis and hip structure to return to its original state and these hormones will cause your uterus to tighten and shrink. Many women suffer from post partum depression during this time as well.

During this time it is important to remain active and follow a nutritious diet. This will ensure that your lose pregnancy weight quickly as well as ensure that you are mentally, emotionally, and physically healthy to take care of yourself and your newborn.

While you may be tempted to begin working out as soon as you leave the hospital, it is suggested that you wait at least 6 to 8 weeks before you see the gym. Many women suffer from hernias during this time because they begin to work out too soon. Once your body has recovered focus on core exercises to tighten up your midsection. Pilates and yoga are great core workouts.

Remember that it will take some time before you will look like you did prior to your pregnancy. By focusing on giving your body time to recover, eat healthy, and work on the core muscles you will be well on your way to losing pregnancy weight quickly.
