Tips for Conducting Confined Space Training

Conducting confined space training is the best way to ensure that your employees are safe. However, coming up with a really good program which is tailored to your specific type of work or business is imperative.

Every year there are a few thousand professionals around the world who end up losing their lives or are injured mainly because of accidents in confined spaces. This is why tight space training is a must for professionals who need to work in these types of tight environments. However, the problem with many of the courses out there and even with the ones offered by businesses in house is the fact that they are inadequate. These courses do not equip workers with the knowledge and practice they need to save themselves. So, in order to save lives training programs will have to be tweaked for maximum effect.

What should the training program include?

To start off with the training needs to cover a number of different safety measures and various protocols. The training program if being conducted in house needs to be suited to that specific job. However, those that seek training for their employees or for themselves need to find a program which is tailored to their specific job description. For instance, people in the mining industry who find themselves working in small spaces may require a slightly different training which includes finding ventilation spots, hearing for signs of a cave in etc.

Common techniques

All tight space training programs should include the following:

  • A ‘watch out’ also known as a ‘safety watch’ technique needs to be taught, whereby a person takes up a position well outside of the space but a place which allows him or her to monitor the situation and send an alert in the event of an impending problem.
  • People who are working inside of a small space will need to follow a few working protocols in order to keep them aware of any danger. So, the program needs to cover monitoring, using sensing equipment, hearing for signs of danger and trigger events which can trap them inside.
  • A special training program will also need to cover tips on spotting potential hazards within the space. However, the hazards will differ depending on the confined space that people work in so the training program will need to be tailored accordingly.
  • It should cover using different types of work related monitors and equipment.
  • How to handle emergency situations in order to mitigate any damage which is caused.

What everyone should keep in mind when working in a confined space?

People who do not regularly have to work in tight spaces will not require a specialized confined space training program to keep them safe. There are a number of things which can be made a part of your routine which will help keep you safe. For instance, take frequent breaks and leave the space completely, a break every hour is the best thing to do. Then prior to returning each time check all the monitoring equipment prior to reentering. Make sure to document your entry and exit each time just so that you have a comprehensive log of the work you’ve done in the event something goes wrong.

Alert force offers some of the most comprehensive confined space training in Australia. Our training programs can be attended via our website and at the successful completion of the course you will be awarded an accredited certificate.
