Article Writing – Are Your Followers Reading

A recent epiphany struck me, are my followers reading my articles, or do they follow me in the hope I read theirs? Article writing is an art, to a certain extent, and a comment on my last article had me thinking. It came from Kyle, re the tempo of an article, “Tempo is one I think most people do overlook, but this can make the difference between someone reading your full article/content and them bailing out half way through.”

This statement struck me as profound, how often does your reader bail? There are among you those that write in such a style and with such tempo, that the end of the article comes just too soon. But I'm afraid we do not all have that ability. Having written 214 articles, I've been surprised at the poor performance of certain of them, and rereading I can see why. I wanted to bail on my article, and I'm sure that is what happened. These articles drew very little commentary from those that were active in their opinions, and now I know why.

The importance given to reading ones own article before publishing, can't be more emphasised, in fact for those of you like me, maybe more than one time. Step away and take a break before you read it. It's known that people will read an article they've just written, and not see blatant errors. This is not dyslexia but merely the brain seeing something different to what is actually there. The equal to writing 43 instead of 34 happens just as easily with letters, one common one I see often on blogs is “hte” instead of “the”.

Why does it happen and how does it get missed on a reread? Simple, it happens because fingers can't always keep up with ones thoughts; and missed? the brain is reading it as right. Spell checks or grammar checks will, or should, pick this up, some, like mine, even self corrects the stupid mistake. But if it doesn't do I notice it? Not always, yet when reading another document it jumps off the page.

But the major point I'm trying to make is simple, when you read your own article, are you bored by it? If you are, stop and re consider the article. Tempo and content go hand in hand, you can have all the right content but with bad tempo, your readers will forget what they've read, if they don't bail. This is an item that I have not been strong on during my writing career, however, I now have my wife read the book I'm writing, chapter for chapter, and she is my biggest critic. As soon as she gets bored with a chapter she stops and hands it back.

Tempo, builds interest, interest ensures a read, it creates memories, and memories make sales. This is why people buy authors second books without really reading the jacket.

good article...I have found myself doing articles and then walking away a bit just to re-read it and say to myself..what the heck was I trying to say...your right our brains work much faster than our fingers do at times....

Yes Steve.. on some occasions I've got so excited I have sat and pounded out a multitude of words... now I cannot type and look at the screen so I look at the keyboard and when finished look up... I have had my spell check wave a white flag at me, the grammar check has crashed and I have no idea of what I was trying to say... but it all still remains fun.. I've recently completed a 120 000 word book and that had places where I found the highlight and delete was easier than trying to work out what I'd said...

I find that I need to re-read my articles at least a week after writing them or else I will read what it was I had intended to say not what is there! That is why an independent proof reader is essential if you wish to eliminate all of your errors. Our brains see what they are expecting to see and not what is there.

Yes Stephen that all important re read... I have found lately that if I print the document it seems easier to edit... on screen I think I am reading what I wanted to write... but that walk away is all important... Sorry I've taken so long to answer but I've never received notice that you commented... better late than never...

Interesting read...I agree with all points concerned especially stepping away from your article before reading it and checking it for typos.

Thanks Sonya... I don't know why I never received notice that I had comments on this articles.. yes that step away is probably the best thing I ever discovered... I have had to do it so often in the last 4 odd months while pumping out and editing a 120 000 book. Thanks for the nice comment...

I read your great article here Rob and...I read all the comments because what you write back to people in your replies is also good reading....I love reading your writing.....I am not practiced at any of this but I am trying to learn from the greats and all the hints and tips I can get.....my writing comes from science and what you learn in science is from all the reading you do there which is mostly many, many, many run on sentences....it kind of is necessary with science.........I love writing and I want to continue so I want to learn...thanks for another great post Rob...I am learning here.......k

I don't know why I never received notice that I had comments on these articles... Thanks Sister.. better late than never... I have completed a handbook or manual you might call it.. 360 pages long 120 000 words... we could not afford an independent editor so had to do it ourselves... the reading by four different people still allowed some errors to creep through, yet when one doesn't point this error out to someone else, they don't see it either... I have a feeling it is because of the way we work and read today.. far faster than what we did say 20 years ago... and speed reading misses so many errors... anyway thanks for the nice comment...

Hi Rob, yes I did read the full articles and you have made some really interesting points. I generally try to write a number of articles on any given day but I don't post them. I will go back a couple of days later or the following morning and read it with fresh eyes make some changes and then post. I find that distance helps me see where it could be improved. Thanks for posting

Hi Rob, thanks for reminding me about the importance of proofreading. I tend to pay more attention to grammatical and spelling mistakes than figuring out whether the article creates a good tempo. The first two problems are sometimes easier for me to correct (grins!) than the situation with the tempo. I am looking for ways to get more people to read my articles.

Thanks Sarah, yes tempo and content not an easy match to get right. grammar and spelling much easier... to seek more reads is one of those things I still remain amazed at.. articles of mine moved so slow in the beginning and merely by reading others and commenting on their articles I got more reads, yet sometimes an article would just take off... something to do with SEO or what ever it's called... I was merely honing my skills and not looking for major exposure for IM, but there are things that help like sharing on FB, Google + etc...

Rob this is a very helpful article that really got me thinking. I know I'm going to pay more attention to the "tempo" next time I submit something. Thanks!

Can't see the forest because of the trees...I reread all of my articles like most do...I catch some errors but you are right when looking at your article all seems ok...until published then it does not read so well....no flow...it jumps all over the place....no wonder no one commented...? when reading someone elses article mistakes jump at you....easir to see otheres mistakes than your own I guess.....nice article Rob...so true...

Reply

Now that is so true Tim.. others mistakes jump out of the article.. and your own don't... must be something to do with what the eye wants to see not what it actually sees...

Your points are very god here Rob. I will speak for my tempo which I know is really slow but maybe I am a perfectionist as others tell me. When I write something I always print it before publishing it because for some reason I can see on paper all mistakes, either it is grammar or a matter of meaning, I can not spot on the screen. And since I am not a professional writer it takes time and it also takes time to follow the articles of so many people. So, I have to spent a day every week to read and comment the articles that interest me

Maria I have always found your articles flow well, and have never felt bored reading them... your writing in English for someone who I'm sure is not from an English home is outstanding... I love your articles and that's why I always read them... so not to woory in your case...

Rob, Good points:-) One to add? We are all getting better by each article we write. Looking back is useful. But looking back is history! When we learn from history we gain by our ability to avoid making the same mistakes. Well not ever but over and over moment by moment. Street Articles is more than just our following though. For example? For me ...I'm planting forests. Each article is an acorn. Planted to learn as well as to live here for the long term growth. Much delight from my visitors and followers!! Don't get me wrong. I love hearing from you and all. But with my articles here-- my main purpose is the long haul. That means I need to work on quality. But the major point you make is that!!! Engagement quality. Tempo and content go hand in hand, yup! You're right. I'm very slow with articles but am learning to go faster. Looking back? I've gotten better and faster. blessings, Cynthia

Yes Cynthia, I agree, why did I start writing on SA? To learn to write, to improve my ability to write techie docs and manuals, to connect with customers all over the world. I am a face to face type person, I can sell and have always been good at that, but on a one on one basis. The program cannot be sold in that manner, so I have to be able to put in writing my expressive nature and sell the program with words on paper... My sojourn on SA has been to teach myself, and I think I've learnt a lot... sure I broke away from tech docs and enjoyed myself with all sorts, not attempting or writing to get Google ranking or to make sales but just for the fun and learning curve. Also I needed to be able to type quicker and type fast enough to keep up with the brain... again I've achieved that... but looking back at some of the articles I can see I lost the plot tempo and content wise, lost my audience and that has also taught me a lesson or two. One article I had with little to no reads, resubmitted all of a sudden became a major read... analysis needed... but this has been fun and enjoyable as well as a lesson in the art of writing...I can now type an article of 500 words in 20 minutes, that was a 2 hour job in the past.... so I give myself an A+

Wow! That's incredible. I'm looking forward to reaching your ability there in speedily getting good stuff together. For you? Going in other directions is a good example of being goofy. As in? you expanded your comfort zone. So the fact that you did so imperfectly is exactly and only the way to be goofy. You've got to do something imperfectly and learn and improve. Now? Your stuff going out with your software is likely so far above your prior level you cannot begin to describe the difference. Keep up the great work! Please do write an article on your software release. Internet Marketing's a good category here...
