How Taking Part In Writing Challenges Can Improve Your Article Writing

If you’re fairly new to article writing and finding it a struggle to write quickly enough or often enough, taking part in writing challenges can really help to improve your overall writing skills. There are different types of challenges that you can take part in including writing a single article under timed conditions or a series of articles over a period of time. If you’ve never tried one it’s something as an experienced article writer that I’d definitely recommend.

So how can they help?

Provide a framework

Unless you’re absolutely passionate about your writing it can sometimes be difficult to stay focused and be disciplined enough to sit down and write articles on a regular basis. Taking part in a writing challenge can provide a framework albeit for a limited time and help you to focus.

Have fun with writing

As long as you approach writing challenges with the right attitude it should be fun to take part. Relax and enjoy the writing process. Don’t put a lot of pressure on yourself to be perfect. That’s not what they’re about.

Motivating

Writing challenges aren’t really about ‘competition’ but writing with other people can actually act as a motivator. Suddenly where you might have been struggling to write a couple of hours a day, you find that you’ll get on and do it (if only because you don’t want to admit to your fellow writers that you didn’t complete the challenge!)

Opportunity to learn from others

Depending on where you complete the article challenge you can learn a great deal from reading other writer’s work and their experiences of taking part. This is invaluable as you can learn all sorts of tips which you can later implement in your own writing. Also in some challenges there’s the opportunity to have your work critiqued by a fellow writer. Again any advice is absolutely invaluable.

Increase your writing speed

Article writing isn’t a speed test, but many new writers struggle to write their articles as quickly as they would like. Taking part in a speed writing challenge can really help with this. I’ve often taken part in ones where you had to write, edit, add links and publish within 30 minutes. The first time I found it absolutely daunting, but the more I did them the better I got at writing at speed .

Improved self-belief

If you don’t really believe in your ability as an article writer taking part in writing challenges that require you to produce articles on a regular basis can really help to improve your self-belief. It’s very much harder to tell yourself you can’t write when you’re actually doing it.

Summary

If you're new to article writing taking part in writing challenges really can make a significant difference to your article writing. They can improve your overall speed, give you focus and provide opportunities for you to learn more about the art of article writing.

Great Bev, this weeks challenge was terrific for me mainly because it put the impetus back into my efforts. I also came out of it today with the realisation that to do one article or blog per day is well achievable and so that is an added bonus for me, Regards Keith
