Learning the Basics Of Article Writing is Key to Writing Articles People Want to Read

If as part of your internet marketing activities, you’re going to be writing articles for your website or article directories, it’s important that you don’t skip on learning the basics of article writing. Why is it so important? Well according to Kissmetrics only 16% of people actually read word for word on a webpage. Therefore as most people are skimming, it’s important that you get it right, avoid the most common article writing mistakes and produce the sort of articles that people really want to read. Here are 7 things that you will want to think about.

Whether you're writing a blog or an article or static pages on a website choosing keywords is important in order to get ranked in Google and to attract a greater number of visitors. Although in the past writers would use their keyword throughout their article it’s accepted practice now to just use your keyword in your article title and the first paragraph.

Catchy headlines

We all know that newspapers are famous or infamous for their headlines. Sometimes their headlines have been so outrageous that they have been changed between the first and second edition. However, it is the headlines that grab people’s attention. Although when writing an article you may not want to be shocking or controversial you still want to produce a headline that will encourage people to keep reading.

Quality content

Offer your reader content that will be useful to them. It may solve a problem, it may fulfil a need, it may amuse them, it may get them thinking. Of course it will entirely depend on the context, but there’s nothing worse than producing sloppy content that makes people leave your website. If you’re providing data and information that comes from elsewhere, make sure that it comes from reputable sources that you accredit within your article. Offering poor quality content is an article writing mistake you want to avoid.

Original content

Although it often happens, it’s sad when you see that people have copied other people’s content. Don’t fall into that trap. Of course you can be inspired by what other people write. Plenty of us write on the same subjects. However, your content should always be your own. This is a mistake that there is no need to make.

Good structure

Many experienced article writers use set article templates to help give a structure to their articles. It’s important if you’re going to write articles that people want to read that they are well structured and there is a natural flow to them. Articles that jump all over the place are not good and will deter people from reading.

'Good enough' grammar

I know there are many article writer who will look at this sub heading ‘good enough grammar’ and be absolutely furious. However, I say good enough grammar, because there are many pages on the internet where the grammar isn’t perfect – mind included. But you need to be honest with yourself. If your grammar is so poor that it interferes with the readers understanding of your article – then you need to do something about it.

Limit colloquialisms and slang

The great thing about article writing is that it gives you the opportunity to develop your own style and build up a personal following. However, it’s important that you’re aware that whenever you use colloquialisms and slang you may be losing some of your readers and/or potential customers. People will leave a page if it’s full of language and phrases they don’t understand.

These are just 7 things you should be thinking about if you’re new to article writing and want to develop your writing skills. There are common article writing mistakes you should avoid such as writing poor quality content, not structuring your content or using content that is not your own. You should ensure that your grammar and general writing is good, that you have catchy headlines, use your keywords in the title and first paragraph and provide content that will leave your readers wanting more.

Just wanted to point out something on your website, number 3, I'm assuming it's supposed to be 'Typing errors' but instead it reads 'Tying errors'. Kind of ironic, and semi-amusing, but I wanted to make you aware, regardless. Great article, though, thank you!

Thank you!! Funny and embarrassing. Not the first and probably won't be the last. I don't know how many times I looked at that page and didn't pick it up. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Beverley

Haha, no worries, I'm something of a grammar Nazi, I see soo many spelling errors. I usually try not to say anything, because most people aren't too concerned about a few here and there, but I figured, considering the context of this particular error, you would want to know =]
