When I hear the mail truck pull up at the mailbox in front of our house, I like to go get the mail. I step outside, notice the sights and sounds around me, and head for the mailbox. I imagine finding something good when I open the mailbox, such as a letter from my grandparents or a Barbie Collector magazine. Instead, however, I usually find letters from lenders. I then walk back inside, sift through the stack of mail, pull out the mail for my husband, and tell him, “You got fan mail from ________.” The letters I am telling him about are not fan mail, of course, but letters from lenders, asking him to make a payment on his student loans. I often think about how cool it would be if he and I were getting fan mail and how different our lives would be.

First, we would have enough money to live comfortably. By having more money, we could pay our bills, do some of the things that we wanted to do, and hopefully avoid welfare. In addition to having more money than we currently have, our lives would also change in other ways.

A second way in which our lives would change is that shopping trips would likely also double as autograph sessions. We might run into some fans while we are in the cereal aisle of our local discount store, for example, who might ask for our autographs. We would carry some photos of ourselves with us for this purpose, and if anyone asked for an autograph, we would happily stop and sign a picture for him. We would likely notice one other change in our lives: busyness.

Rather than spending a great deal of time at home, we would probably be spending more time on the road, traveling to speaking engagements. We would meet many fascinating people and see parts of the country that we have never seen before. We might also be booked for television appearances.

My husband intends to continue publishing his books, and I am eager to continue my blog. I hope to make a difference and change people’s lives for the better. I hope to get many more Twitter followers. Finally, I hope to one day get some fan mail from readers who like my blog and are eager to see what I will write next. If they want autographed pictures, I will happily sign pictures for them. I will then put the pictures in envelopes, address the envelopes, and send them on to my fans, because I do not want to keep them waiting.
