Bram Stokers Private Journal Has Been Found And May Hold Answers As Well As Questions

Bram Stoker's most famous work is Dracula, but the journal that might hold some of his thought processes leading to that book, still a favorite by many and the subject of many movies has been found. Stoker died in 1912 and parts of his estate have been scattered to various family members, including his great grandson, Noel Dobbs who found the journal on his bookshelf only after being asked about its possibility by another relative. Dacre Stoker, one of Stoker's cousins had previously written a book about his famous relative.

The small journal was sitting among the other books on Dobbs' shelf after being moved from the attic and was signed Abraham Stoker.

While there has been many books written about Bram Stoker by historians and fans, there has rarely been anything written by the man about himself until now. Journals had long been searched for, figuring in many of his writings including part of the plot of Dracula. Fans will have to wait until next spring to read the words that he used when the journal is released in March of 2012.

The journal was started in 1871 when Stoker was in his twenties, a recent graduate from Trinity College and working at Dublin Castle. Some of the entries are long and may have been early attempts at writing while others are nothing but a sentence or two. The journal is ten years old before he stumbles upon the inspiration for Dracula, the legend of Vlad the Impaler, the infamous Wallechia Prince that was storied to have impaled his enemies and left them to hang as a warning against all others who would try to cross him. The legend would grow until he was rumored to have drank the blood of one of his victims the day before battle. During that battle, he was reported to have been struck down and killed. When he returned to battle after that injury, his enemies declared him a monster.

The very last entry in the journal was Stoker's beginning of one of the major characters in Dracula, that of Renfield. In the journal, Stoker wrote about a boy who would catch flies and put them into a bottle, "so many flies that they had not room to die". Renfield, who went mad after staying with Dracula, captured flies, spiders and moths for their lives.

Also included in the journal was the Shadow Builder, Stoker's first horror story. Some of the beginnings of stories later included in the collection Under the Sunset are also in the journal. Stoker was described as "fascinated" by children and many of his stories beyond Dracula featured sleeping or dreaming children.

The journal revealed some of the funny sayings that Stoker collected as well as some of his warm and romantic moments. But, it also suggested that there might be another journal, somewhere.
