Complicated People Always Don’t - Eh? - Lack Of Simplicity In Writing And Speaking

Complexity has long been taken to be the signal that what we are seeing is probably meant for intelligent people. Yet complexity fundamentally means that something is complicated. So rather being a signal that what we are seeing is meant for intelligent people, complexity is actually the signal that what we are seeing is meant for complicated people; not necessarily intelligent people.

On the contrary; the intelligent person is likely to sense that complexity is quite probably the signal that not-necessarily intelligent people are doing something that requires them to use complexity to cover it up. Confused?

Fine; because what I have just written is a prime example of how an intelligent person would not write. An intelligent person is more likely to write that the more complicated something is to understand, the less intelligent it probably is. A really intelligent person would probably write something like; Simplicity is the Sister of Intelligence. And that would be that. Point made.

Much of what we see in the way of complicated writing, or speech is actually an attempt to demonstrate that behind the point being made is a world of knowledge and wisdom, when in actual fact, complexity is the first give away that ignorance is probably more prevalent than insight. So why do we see so much complexity of the written and spoken word?

I suggest a great deal of this is down to the presence of fear driven anger. Many of us who write or speak are often afraid that what we write or speak will be criticised or seen through, so we ‘sex it up’ – complicate it with big words, circuitous sentences and ‘riddle me this’ phrases.

Many of us fall into this trap and settle on the notion that if it’s complicated it must be written by very intelligent people. Hogwash! – pardon the simplicity!

Intelligence for me is evidenced by a broad spectrum of perception coupled with at least one deep or profound insight into at least one subject matter; for example a broad minded Priest understanding his faith deeply, or a broad minded Surgeon; his anatomical speciality.

And there is one other thing which intelligence is for me; the capacity to explain deep, profound subjects in broadly understandable, simple language. Complexity for me is simply not intelligent – so for anyone who writes something they would like me to read (usually something that involves me giving someone money) just put it in broadly simple terms.

If I owe you £10 or $10 just say that I owe you £10 or $10. It really is quite frustrating to uncomplicate a phrase such as ‘having assessed your financial reimbursement to us over the last quarter, we discern that monies required to balance the outstanding imbalance on your account equates to the sterling/dollar 10, of which we would legitimately remind you that you responsible for furbishing us with...’

To some this might seem evidence of someone who is well schooled. To me it seems like someone who just wants his money but is too afraid to say ‘give me the money you owe me.’

Anyway – to the simple of point of this article; if you do a lot of speaking or writing like I do; Keep it simple. Intelligent people always do. Complicated people always don’t!
