Don\'t Let Them Escape!

Writers LIVE on ideas. Hot ideas, trendy ideas, disturbing and absorbing ideas; they all fuel our writing. As a writer I am constantly having writing ideas pumping through my brain.

So how to explain this horrible and common effect... the paralysing condition of sitting before a blank computer screen (fully ready to write), and NOT ONE IDEA PRESENTS ITSELF. They dried up and disappeared like an ice cube in the Sahara!

This is abysmally depressing and a huge waste of my writing time. I got really tired of this and now I don't let those ideas escape! I created an "idea file" on my computer. Just a file where I can capture and retain those hot ideas. Sometimes it is just a notepad note (I don't even fire up the writing software), with the url of a website, or a note with parts of the idea. Sometimes it is a whole pdf to use as a resource document.

Here is the important concept: don't get too complicated with this. Its whole mission is just to be a bucket of ideas that you can dip into when you are there staring at the blank document screen on your computer. If you make it too complicated, you are not likely to do it...

As this file expanded, I did find it helpful to create subfolders by subjects (I saved lots of searching time after doing this). If I am going to be an idea horder, I at least want them stacked in neat bins so as not to topple over and bury me!

I do have a confession. Since IDEAS can't be copyrighted (unlike specific written material), they are free to be netted and caged until pulled out as needed to perform. My mind is a circus of ideas! I do strive to be the ringmaster and not the clown... but I digress... I confess that I LOVE to pull ideas from other people's content.

Therefore I subscribe to:

* newsletters/RSS feeds in niches that I am interested in

* Google "Alerts" on specific keywords

* the ConsumerWorld (dot) org newsletter

* Internet Scambusters newsletter

You can create your own information flow of ideas on subjects interesting to you and your writing.

You know, when gas goes to $5.00 a gallon, and the trucks quit delivering the packaged ideas to the idea store, this huge horde of ideas of yours will be worth gold! When your fellow writers have run out of fresh ideas, you can saunter over to your hard drive and dive for endless pearls of ideas. Sweet, huh? Yeah, I want this for you.

An awesome idea, the "idea file". I also have one of these but many writing concepts and ideas still slip my mind and I always regret it. I also keep notes on my phone when I get ideas for content as well as this can help. We all have enough ammunition to write content in an ongoing basis, we just need a better and more effective way to "store" our ideas. I think your suggestions are great and that any writer that reads this, will benefit from.

@ Kyle, Thanks for your kind comment, and for adding a new area of idea storage...your phone! I still have that old flip phone that only "talks" lol, so I am behind the times on what these new phones can do. But I know lots of people have the new phones. Thanks for your suggestion, it is a good one!

Yeah, phones and tablets (iPhones and iPads) are great devices for storing and elaborating on ideas. Before I build out an idea it typically ends up on a laptop or desktop, but the initial idea can be put just about anywhere. A piece of paper works just fine as well!
