It Can Be Done

All of my life, I have enjoyed the English language.

I love to hear it spoken in the proper form. I find it extremely pleasing to the ear to hear someone like Hugh Grant speak. It holds the same impact to me as, music to my ears.

Why do so many people choose to shorten words ie tom. which should rather be, tomorrow. I also try my utmost to continue using my spelling skills and only turn to the computer, when I really do need assistance.

It is amazing to find out that we will never know all the words in the dictionary in our entire lifetime, as there are so many words, that we are not even aware of, let alone use.

I have often wondered whether in fact new words are still created and do some old words, fall away ?

I still to this day, always make a point in using full words when sending text messages. I also appreciate it, when I see my family and friends doing the same in return, as I see it as vitally important.

Working with Authors and Poets, has taught me many things about my passion for English. I have had a desire for many years to write a book. I think that so many , if not all of us, feel the same. We each have a story to tell but of course, that is not what makes a successful book.

My best poetry has been at my darkest hours and began many years ago. I have even experienced moments when I cannot even put two words together. Then other times, I will write a poem once, run through it and feel satisfied with it.

My love for English started as a young girl at school. I received high grades and then when I was thirteen years old my life turned , I went through a year of darkness and found even my hand writing changed . For the better I might add.

My Grand father was a sign writer and an artist during the war. So I think he had an influence on this, as I used to watch him work and also saw his painting/writing techniques.I found it very therapeutic as well and would often find myself doodling with sign writing..

Then at the age of fourteen years, my English teacher asked me to help him with a three week project in English, that he was asked to do by the Head Master. He told me that my hand writing would be put into the archives of the school, which you can imagine , made me feel very privileged. We both worked hard at it for the three weeks and barely a word was said. You could see the pleasure that we both experienced from this project, which I believe the Head Master was very pleased with. To this day , I still embrace that time.

I look forward to pushing my limits with my writing and poetry.

Street Talk

I too am concerned about the state of English. Text and F/B messages combined with pure laziness are to blame. Whenever I contact my (now estranged) children by email or Facebook, I make a point of writing good English to set them a good example! Thanks for the article, Ronnie.

Kim, I agree with you one hundred percent. Even, with my adult friends, I will not allow myself to become habitually lazy in my English communication and correspondence, even though many of them have chosen to shorten words because they feel it is trendy.

It's the French I feel a bit sorry for. Their language is being totally under-mined by the Internet and words like Parking, Shampooing etc. poor things!

Nice article Ronnie. I truly believe that English is being butchered and it is sad but then languages like life evolve - but with help from people like you maybe we can slow the process. Your rankings will climb rapidly.

Aaaahhh, the beauty of language. I also embraced english in high school. It saddens me to see it getting mangled and mashed so regularly nowadays. Even on public platforms grammar and spelling are suffering. None of us are perfect but when it's blatant disregard I find it disrespectful. Guess that makes me stodgy and old fashioned... or just aware of beauty in pure forms. Thank you for your article Ronnie and welcome to a wonderful circle of authors. AJ and Rob are two of the best!

Wham and Ronnie makes her entrance, love the article and the expounding of wisdom. I am going to push this article to get you a few more followers and readers. Yes the shortening of words is a disease that has crept in over the last few years and it is to me also a pity. I was never good at school in the English language and used this medium to try and improve, hopefully I have. We all have a book in us somewhere and I have two going at the same time as we speak, that brick wall is the problem cruising along and then blank, a terrible feeling.
