Resources for Writers And Writing Instructions

One of the biggest obstacles to becoming a writer, if not the biggest, has to be the financial rut we run into as we pursue our craft. As we wait for rejection slip after rejection slip, we find ourselves relying on friends and family members for food and shelter, unable to scrounge up the funds become independent through our regular jobs -- if we have any. Sure, you hear about bestselling authors all the time, and the millions and millions they have to spare, but the reality is different for the vast majority of writers. We don't get paid millions. We barely get paid in singles. And that holds doubly true for new authors who haven't yet found their way.

Well, this is Street Articles, so this is probably not news to anyone. The common writer is about as financially secure as the common vagabond -- and our imaginations just as wild.

Therefore, it helps to know that certain support systems exist out there for writers living on the verge. One such support is a website called Funds For Writers, run by the bestselling author C. Hope Clark. For a decade it has been on Writer's Digest 101 Best Websites for Writers, and for good reason.

Through weekly newsletters that offer personal advice from Clark herself, words of encouragement from fellow authors and subscribers, and announcements on the latest and greatest contests, market openings, grants and other -- you guessed it -- "funds for writers", Clark has aided numerous writers on their journeys from rut to shelter to hard-earned success, or sometimes just toward zen.

But finding the funds to pursue one's craft is only half the battle. Writers need inspiration, practice, and a lot of time on their hands. How to Write Stories is another site that aims to help -- but on the writing side of things instead.

How to Write Stories features short, straight-to-the point advice on just about everything related to storytelling, from coming up with character names to offering good story ideas and more. In the scheme of things, it's a small and inconsequential resource that probably won't transform the average writer into a household name with its training, but as was stated before, not every writer is destined to become such -- nor should that even be the end goal.

If you're a writer, or looking to become one sometime in the future, arm yourself with these resources. The pen and paper aren't very good substitutes for swords and shields, even if they can forge a whole lot of them.
