The Least the Reader Deserves; The Writer is Not A Businessman

Writing ought to be born from love for the reader, rather than for love from the reader.

Many of us do things to get rather than to give. For example, some might write for the potential fame it might bring, whilst others might write for the help it can give. Of the two reasons for writing; the latter is the better.

There are two reasons for this:

1. Writing is not a particularly fame engendering practice. Neither is it a particularly (financially) profitable one. There are few who make a living from it out-with journalism etc; and even they are seldom ‘famous’ unless appearing on TV or radio as well as writing.

2. Writing is an effective way to share something that might actually help someone change their life for the better.

If even one reader of that which is written benefits from it being written, then the unsought reward of the piece being worth writing is immense.

Of course the writer might never learn of her writing’s part in another’s enhanced life, and this is why many writers look to finance and readership statistics to try and discover whether what they are writing has value. They seek approval in profit and percentages – a business reward rather than a service-gift. In essence; they write for their own esteem rather than their reader’s evolution.

I believe the reader senses this. They detect the writer who is selling something amid the writers who are giving something. They intuit that they are reading something written for them by the author; not for the author.

Readers are often more intelligent than writers, and there are more of them; so collectively they are a reading entity which the writer ought not to try to outwit or abuse. The writer if anything is a servant; blessed with the capacity to write in the service of the reader.

The reader might opt to praise and reward the writer in all sorts of ways, but ultimately the writer’s healthiest reason and reward for writing is the blessing to be able to write. The seeking of approval via profit and percentages is the activity of a businessman, not a writer.

If the blessing of the writing ability naturally evolves into a multiply rewarding service then so be it. But to strategically seek to profit from a blessing is to do no more than act like the president of a union misusing position and trust for personal gain, whilst the union members ( akin to the readership) are let down; mis-served.

This is in no way an indictment of business entrepreneurs. It is merely a message to the reader who might read this. Not all us who write want your money or approval. We merely wish to express our gratitude for taking the time to read what we are to serve you; our written love.

That is why I say; Writing ought to be born from love for the reader, rather than for love from the reader. It is the least the reader deserves.

Those were excellent points, David. I agree completely. The motives behind our actions are often clearly perceived by those we try to hide them from. I don't want to imply that people who write for business purposes only are being intentionally deceptive. My point is, some who are only writing to get something from the reader and not give useful information the reader can use to improve their lives or imparting useful knowledge as a gift, are only fooling themselves in the long run in my humble opinion.
