Who Should Write?

I found Street Articles through a friend, Dave Howard, whom I have never even met. A “very average bloke” as he calls himself, who wrote his first Street Article.

This “very average bloke” teaches people how to drive the big rigs, earth moving gear, forklifts amongst other things, has a family with two little kids and supports his wife in her new business adventure as an importer for Flavon Max from Hungary. I don’t know how you, dear reader, evaluate this situation, but in my experience, average blokes don’t write articles to promote their new nutrition business. I must say, I really enjoyed reading Dave’s article because there was this feeling of honesty, ‘down to earth-ness’. It was a breath of fresh air to read “this bloke’s” writing. I just hope that Dave keeps writing because we desperately need people like him sharing their experiences and let the world know what is it like to be an “average bloke” so we can hear their voices and have an insight into their lives and their dreams. Keep writing Dave! Look forward to reading more of your articles!

I have been writing for a few years just for fun and have a few E-Books on Amazon.

As a professional musician, I have performed and traveled a lot around the word and had a pretty good life and experienced and learned a lot. Than 19 years ago I had an opportunity to take up a position in Music at the Australian National University in Canberra and move to Australia. The initial half a year contract got extended to five than to a tenured position. Than changed position and moved to Melbourne where I found home. I visited Hungary, my country of origin, yearly because I was terribly home sick and had family and friends there and not much other than my job here. As my carrier got established here and started to make a few friends and I was telling my stories to the closest friends they encouraged me to write things down and share the stories with others. That was the first encouragement to write. There was something else though...My dad used to write. He had a daily job as an engineer but in his free time he used to write poems and Sci-fi novels. He had the most individual, very artistic hand-writing that was not easy to read. He had these hand-bound notebooks that he used to write in with the most beautiful fountain-pens or sometimes with pencil. I still remember them. Unfortunately, all our inheritance has been thrown to the trash and wasted after my Mum’s passing away. My brother, who is 14 years younger and his wife, now ex-wife, had no idea about the value of a lot of things that were there. Family movies and these writings of my dad all had been wasted. I think not having family is one thing but I would have liked to have one of these books to myself!

Not being native speaker of English, I was very aware of my mistakes and this blocked me from writing. However, in my position as an academic, I had to write a lot. As the years passed my urge to write became stronger, my English better and my confidence stronger. I also became quite aware of the situation of migrants in Australia. I felt that people whose second language is English don’t contribute in a lot of ways because of the language barriers. We miss out on a lot from migrants, what they could tell us, show us, teach us and share with us. This is when I realized that I should not hold back anymore but take the risk and start writing. Even if there are be people who would judge and point out the mistakes. But we have so much to offer, so much to contribute to society! So this started me up on writing. I feel, I have things to say. I have a lot to contribute. I have a lot to offer. I have a voice. In today’s world with technology and with sites like this, we all can have a voice and find an avenue to share the things we want and ready to share.

I love reading. However, lately, I find a lot of pleasure and satisfaction not just reading from professional writers but articles and books from 'ordinary' people, who just wanted to share their experiences, like Dave, the “very average bloke”. For me, these people have more credibility. Because they are ‘one of us’. So back to the original title...Who should write? Anyone who has somethings to say and wants to write. Always the readers do the final judgement but the fun, we all can have! So keep writing Dave!

Cheers, Piroska
