Writing Mistakes To Avoid

This articles covers some writing mistakes to avoid. You may be writing an article to promote your website or that great novel, it makes no difference if you don't follow certain rules to avoid rejection or reader criticism or indifference. Here we discuss a few content, structure, and grammar errors.

You write to provide relevant content on some subject. This is particularly true of the Internet because search engines are looking for content for searchers using specific keywords. Your article or web site will have a low rating if the content is not relevant to what the searcher wants. It needs to be specific and relevant. Don't copy other people's content. You may quote small portions if you reference properly.

You don't need to be William Shakespeare to write an article, a letter, a theses, a report, or a press release. Most people can just write as they talk if they avoid grammatical errors. Spell checkers will point out spelling errors for those using a computer. Grammar errors are also pointed out by some checkers. But if you talk to your reader like you do to your neighbor across the fence or in a letter to your grandmother, you will be all right.

A sentence carries one idea. A paragraph contains that sentence and sentences relating to that sentence. When you change the subject, you need a new paragraph.

Long sentences, complex in structure, are harder to understand than short sentences. In general forget semicolons that may just prolong the misery. Insert a period and start a new sentence. You should watch the use of commas too. They are often over used and the formalities of using them have been relaxed. You decide if it helps a sentence to read better.

Here are some grammar errors to avoid:

1. There when you mean their. There is a place. Their indicates possession. Put their dog in that kennel over there. Such words are called homonyms because they sound alike. They are very common so watch out: where, ware, wear and fair, fare are examples. When you use the wrong homonyms some spell checkers will think that is just fine. Watch out.

2. Its and it's are often misused. Remember that it's is a contraction of it is. Its relates to possession. The cat licked its paw.

3. Then and than. Your spell checker will probably miss an error in usage. Then relates to time. Than relates to a comparison. The dog barked. Then he jumped over the fence. My house is larger than your house.

4. Make sure the verb agrees with the subject. His book. Their books. His books. Just make sure you are saying what you mean to say.

If you have a problem with writing errors buy one of the fine small books of common writing and speaking errors such as The Most Common Mistakes in English Usage (Schaum's Paperbacks) by Thomas Berry. Serious writers should have a copy of the The Chicago Manual of Style: The Essential Guide for Writers, Editors, and Publishers (14th Edition).

There are sources on the Internet that will teach you the few skills needed to write articles and ebooks for the Internet.

Dr. Jones: THANK YOU! I have been over zealous in my proofreading desires to the Street Articles and WA University materials as well. I have been told that Internet users average only 7th grade reading levels. I appreciate your efforts to set the record straight. I do believe that anyone cares that when I read a mistake, it bothers me. I can benefit by your hearty opening to the information you wanted to share. You are encouraging. Thanks.
