5 Fabulous Health Benefits Of Yoga

As we age, our bodies begin to slow down, ache, and literally break down right before our eyes. When I turned 40 it was as if a switch went off in my body and all of a sudden, almost over night, my body felt old. My mind however, remained firmly planted in my mid-twenties, so I wanted to figure out whether or not I could get my body age to feel closer to my mind’s age.

So, I went on what I thought would be a short research hunt to see what I could do to feel better. The research, as it turns out, has been ongoing and now as I am on the brink of being 50, it has been time very well spent. Based simply on conversations with my friends and colleagues, I feel less tired, have less aches, and have fewer injuries than they are having as they age.

One of the greatest weapons in my “feel good after 40” arsenal is yoga. I began practicing yoga early in my 40s when I stumbled upon a list of its benefits. Being extremely dubious of such a list, I just had to try it to prove all the research wrong. Surprisingly to me, all of the research was right.

A few of the benefits of yoga that can really help you feel better as you age are:

Reduction in stress. When your body is relaxed, stress levels are diminished. Practicing yoga on a regular basis gives you the ability to relax your body and mind when stress starts to creep into your day.

Help in reducing and maintaining weight loss. Even for beginners, yoga can give a person a good workout. Additionally, practicing yoga can keep you more in tune to your body. This awareness, as well, can help in weight loss.

Strengthening muscles. Practicing yoga on a regular basis will increase core muscle strength.

Increase in energy. There are many yoga poses that are excellent to practice in the morning or any time during the day that you need a boost of energy. I have found that by practicing yoga, I feel more energized all day long.

Reduction in lower back pain (this was HUGE for me!). When a person practices yoga, their posture improves. Improving posture can significantly relieve lower back pain. Yoga can also target muscles that are tight, helping to gently stretch them and thus lessen or eliminate lower back pain.

These are just a few of the many benefits of practicing yoga on a regular basis. Once I started I found that there are so many more than I had even read about, the most important being just an overall increase in good health.

Yoga is just one of many great finds in my quest to be vibrant, healthy and strong after 40. I have discovered many natural remedies and practices. Now I am certain that even as I age, the age I feel in my mind and the age my body will feel will be as closely aligned as possible.
