What are the benefits of yoga, in general? This article will answer that question. Yoga can be used in so many different ways. Many people believe that yoga is all about the postures that you physically perform, but it goes beyond this. Yoga is practiced in its full expression at all times, as you walk around with full presence, living in the fullest moment and bringing the light of consciousness to everyone you meet and everything you do. Yoga teaches you that it is about simply being rather than doing, and that the joy of existence can flow through you when you do things in this state of understanding. Without the path of yoga, most people are not able to understand this truth.

Yoga guides us to living in union with our spirit. The physical form (including emotions and thoughts) is a powerful and necessary reality in our lives, but it isn’t the ultimate. The physical form allows us to do and experience, but ultimately it’s consciousness that provides the movement and the breath that powers all of this and experiences it. Most people become very wrapped up in the physical because it is more obvious and superficial. It takes work to remain aware (and more work to even become aware) even in times of high emotion and thought. Yoga retreats can sometimes help to awaken those who are on the brink of awakening, or even those who have never considered these spiritual ideas. So awakening people to the reality of their existence is one of the best benefits of yoga. The reality is that you don’t have to live in pain or desperate wanting or fear. You are already complete and you are already alive. Try a yoga retreat and see how immersion in the practice can transform your inner self and let your flame burn more brightly.

In a similar way, yoga teachers training can have the same effect. Usually the individuals participating in a yoga teachers training will already be receptive to awakened consciousness, but they may not have a firm grip on it. This is fine. It’s not hypocritical if a teacher is still working at it themselves. The thing is that the training will help to focus them and really unblock some of those lingering egotistical setbacks that prevent the spirit from showing.

You don’t have to do the retreat or the training, however, in order to reap the benefits of yoga. Simple personal practice is more than enough. You will be able to come to know yourself more fully and slowly. You’ll learn to identify signals in your body and appropriately, kindly respond to them before they turn into disease or emotional imbalance.
