From Oms to Omg!: How Pumped Up Yoga Shapes Your Body That Much Faster

There are many kinds of yoga to choose from all depending on your overall goal and your level of current practice. Using weights with your yoga practice is not entirely new, Rodney Yee has a yoga program called Yoga Burn that uses a number of poses and light hand weights to increase calorie burn. But now, the concept is becoming more popular . In New York City, people are coming to the Shred class founded by Erin Jacques but there are other classes as well as DVD options for people who want to bring a little burn to their yoga practice.

The advantage of doing yoga with weights goes beyond the bump in burn, however. It might bring a better connection between the mind and the muscle group you are working. Part of yoga's major appeal is the mind to body connection that is created from start to finish. Sure, you can do a couple dozen lunges to work your lower body, but if you are doing a move like chair (with a lift) you target way more and you know which muscles you are working while they are in action.

Most yoga with weight practices suggest light weights since the moves are fluid and flowing. A heavy weight might require more stability and a wider stance than what is happening in a yoga practice. The lighter weights allow the same poses to happen with the additional motion of lifting the weight. If you haven't found the right DVD or local class, you can adapt some of your favorite yoga poses, adding weights to them, focusing on getting a full body workout from your practice. You can adapt Sun Salutations to include weights, adding an overhead press to chair pose, for instance. Add an additional push up when you go down into your upward dog position.

For lower body work, use the weights in your hands, holding them in front of your body for additional balance and focus. Whatever type of weights you have, make sure that they allow you to have total control of them, especially if you are doing any of the twisting poses. A great suggestion here would be the weighted gloves that allow you to still do all of your poses without forcing you to actually grip anything. As with any practice, start slowly and then move in to more complicated poses or higher reps as you get better.
