What People May Not Be Telling You About Yoga But Really Need to Know

You have the yoga pants and the yoga mat. You either signed up for a class at a local yoga studio or gym or you have bought a yoga DVD. Looks like you are all set to do yoga, right? There might be a few more things that you need to know. True, devotees have been telling others to do yoga for years, but they might be forgetting a few simple facts that they need to share as well. First, yoga is not about the clothes that you wear or the equipment that you buy. That should be given. It is also not suggested for those who cannot come with an open mind. It is not about the ability to twist your body into nearly impossible poses. There are several other things that you need to understand before you even get to those types of moves.

Yoga is not a short term fix for problems like weight loss or pain in a certain body part. Perhaps you have hamstring issues while you are running. Or you have tight, stiff hips that cause you pain when you sit or stand for long periods. Someone suggests yoga to you. You are not going to solve any and all of your problem with six weeks of yoga and then walk away without ever doing it again. Instead, it is about showing you your limitations and your weaknesses and then teaching you how to adapt or open those areas up. It is about progression, a concept that has no end at all.

People may think that since they are not running for miles or jumping around that yoga is "easy", as in a snap to do. But, it should be made abundantly clear that yoga is neither a snap nor easy to do. Even the most relaxing, seemingly innocuous poses (Shavasana, for one) can be impossibly difficult for someone without the right mindset. If you cannot let go and allow your body to melt into the mat, following the pattern of your breath and really let go, you will get none of its benefits. But, there are other things, like the flexibility that is required or the surprising amount of strength that you will need that can make yoga incredibly difficult.

And finally, it is important to know that yoga takes a very long time to learn. The poses are never ending with many layers of difficulties to master. Every pose has a new level to strive for making it always challenging and always something new.

I like your style! Great article. All the reasons why an ole cowboy like me should not even think about doing any of those moves! LOL I hurt just thinking about them! Thanks for the info, Amie! I will pass this on to two of my daughters who I am sure have the DVD and the mat! I think they are both collecting dust, though! The DVD and mat, not my daughters! LOL
