There are so many benefits to practicing yoga that most people are aware of already. People practice yoga to reduce stress, to help them sleep better, and to help alleviate aches and pains. Some people practice yoga simply because it makes them feel better overall.

What is not commonly known, however, is that yoga can be used to aid in weight loss and maintaining one’s weight after weight loss. In order to lose weight in a healthy way, it is important to eat healthy and to exercise.

There are many yoga poses that require that the pose be held for several minutes. This can increase muscle and posture which both will aid in weight loss. While this type of yoga practice is very valuable, in order to increase weight loss it is important to incorporate cardiovascular exercise into your daily routine as well.

Practicing yoga in a yoga class is a great way to experience a vigorous yoga routine. For the most benefit you should incorporate this type of yoga three to four times a week. Most people who use yoga to lose weight also add running or walking into their week. The benefit of doing so is that yoga can keep the body strong and healthy and more protected from injury. Running or walking can improve stamina, keep your heart rate up for an extended amount of time, and improve yoga practice.

Before starting any type of exercise program, especially one to lose weight, consult your doctor to make sure that it is appropriate for you.

Once you have your doctor’s permission, it can be helpful to find a yoga class that either solely concentrates on power yoga, or incorporates power yoga into at least part of the class. Power yoga is a term used to describe a vigorous yoga workout with the goal being fitness-based. It does not follow a series of poses, but instead focuses on strength and flexibility. Many gyms now hold power yoga classes.

If you are new to yoga, or overweight, you will want to start out in a beginner’s class or with beginner videos. There are many videos online that can get you started with yoga for weight loss.

In addition to increasing one’s stamina, strengthening the body and increasing flexibility, practicing yoga will help with a person’s posture, making them look and feel better. Practicing yoga is just one of the many ways I have learned to create a vibrant, healthy and strong life in my 40s. I credit yoga to helping me maintain my weight and fitness goals over the past several years.
