Yoga Therapy

Yoga is an art or technique of joining or uniting all aspects of an individual - body, mind and soul. Once these three unite we will achieve the complete happiness in life. The word Yoga is derived from the word “Yuj” in Sanskrit, which means to join or unite. Yogi is one who has attained control of his emotions and actions. Yoga is believed to be handed over to the mankind by these yogis who practiced yoga to its utmost perfection.

In the yoga sutras of Pathanjali who was a rishi or yogi, it is mentioned that the ultimate aim of yoga is to attain freedom from all sorrows or worries and live a happy and calm life. It is our work (Karma) or the nature of life which troubles us and we end up in different types of illness and mental agony. Many of us suffer from various illnesses like head ache, neck pain, back pain, joint pain, blood pressure, sugar, thyroid, cancer and what not? It is many a time difficult to find a proper cure for diseases.

Yoga is one which can cure almost every disease if exercised properly. But proper adaptation of its posture, breath control and at the same time careful and well guided execution of Yoga is a must. By just seeing someone doing yoga or watching a video or reading a book, if one start to practice yoga exercises, it can be disastrous. Every movement is important with the proper controlled intake and outlet of breath. The rhythm is also equally important.

Jnana Marga – the Path of Knowledge, Karma Marga – the path of Selfless Work, Bhakti Marga – the path of Devotion and Yoga Marga – the path of the mind and consciousness are main paths in Yoga. There are paths derived from these main ones like

· Raja Yoga

· Mantra Yoga

· Hatha Yoga

· Laya Yoga

In Raja Yoga, we master our mind and senses. Mantra Yoga is basically involving chanting of Mantras, which are sacred syllables or slokas as we call it to reach perfection. In Hatha Yoga, we cultivate our self-energy by practicing Pranayama (breathing techniques) and Asanas (postures). The Laya Yoga takes you to the ultimate bliss. The Vedas and Upanishads of India reference these paths of Yoga.

Mainly Hatha Yoga is used in Yoga Therapy treatments, where one is made to do different types guided of exercises with the help of a master yoga teacher (called Yogacharya in Sanskrit – “Yoga”-“Acharya” where Acharya is Guru or Teacher in simple terms).

Our body becomes flexible by proper practising of Yoga, breath becomes normal without any sort of blockade in the wind pipes, the heart beat becomes normal, blood starts reaching various parts of our body, the body temperature is maintained to an optimum level all toxic bodies are excreted out of our body and then we experience freedom from all sorts of diseases and worries and slowly start to live a happy life.

The time and place you select to do yoga is very much important as well as your punctuality and dedication to it. One must select a calm and quiet place, probably in the early morning or immediately after sunset to practice yoga. It should not be extreme cold or hot condition as you may not get the desired result or you may become very tired after doing yoga.

The body and mind must be brought to our control by doing simple warm up exercises and breathing techniques before we can start serious postures or yoga therapy. We will feel the warmth of hot air once we are fully into it. It is a must to observe total silence and rest after completing a Yoga session of any duration whether it be 10 minutes or one hour. This is generally done by a doing a specific item or posture called “Shavasana”. Shava means dead body. That is our body must be rested like a dead body meaning we must have that much calmness experiencing by doing this posture. The breath should be controlled in such a way that we are not taking deep breath and at the same time we must get adequate supply of air. Body parts must be totally stand still or under rest with no pressure or tension experiencing on any of the body parts. Eyes must be closed and the mind must refrain from unwanted thoughts. The body must be relaxed in such a way that we are in deep sleeping position. Having said so, it is difficult not to fall asleep while doing this item. But you should never sleep in Shavasana posture. For every 30 minutes of Yoga session, one must perform this “Shavasana” for at least 10 to 15 minutes.

Yoga therapy is emerging as a discipline and getting more popular day by day. The Yoga therapists prescribe postures, breathing exercises and techniques to the specific needs of an individual. All exercises are not good for all sorts of diseases. For example, front bending is not at all good (in fact it is harmful) for one who has disc ailment. Instead, he/she must practice back bending exercises.

Yoga therapy when combined with traditional Indian alternative treatment called Ayurveda is very effective as Yoga prepares the body and the Ayurvedic medicines cure the internal ailment. They are hand in hand working to give a fast and highly effective cure to many chronic conditions.
